“What is the definition of strategic human resource management?” This is a big concern for HR professionals as well business leaders. For more than a decade, HR professionals have been trying to sit at the business leadership table in order to influence how the business runs and elevate the importance of the HR function. Most of the time HR professionals are not fully integrated into the business. The HR team isn’t completely involved with the business. It is common for the HR leader to not be involved in the creation of a strategy or making key decisions regarding the way the business will operate. Sometimes, the business leaders aren’t aware of the strategic importance of the HR function and/or why the HR function is important to the company’s strategy. It is beneficial for both business leaders as well as HR professionals to have a shared perception of “What is the strategic HR management should I be focusing on?” The answer is to work together to align the primary responsibilities of the HR function with the overall business plan. Here’s how.

Definition of a Talent Management Strategy: Regardless of the company’s business plan the success of any business depends on attracting the right people. In his popular business publication, Good to Great, business guru Jim Collins emphasizes the importance of “getting the right people on the bus.” The process of putting the right people on the bus and making them to be productive is the goal of human resources. These are the tasks that senior HR leaders must do if they want to become strategic.

Determine the most important positions that will help you implement the strategy. Different positions do not work the same. Some positions are more crucial than others for the implementation and success of the plan. Understanding which positions are most critical to success will enable business leaders to direct their resources and attention in areas where they can get the most “bang for the buck,” and HR professionals can utilize this information as a way of enhancing their role in strategy development.

It is essential to identify the key skills necessary to implement the plan. Based on the industry and the strategy, some skills could be more important than others. These skills are important in the execution of the plan but also the long-term survival and success of an organization.

Employ people who possess the abilities and/or talents to implement the plan. While recruiting people is a standard human resource task but it’s not as difficult now as it was in the past. The HR team should lead the search for the right individuals.

In order to ensure that your company is performing at its best ensure high performance, offer opportunities for growth and education. The business environment in the 21st Century is constantly changing. Therefore, it is vital to continue training and developing your skills. The best people will not be able to keep abreast with the latest trends without constant learning. The most successful business strategies will incorporate a component for developing individuals to be able to compete in the future. HR leaders should be there to design the development and training strategies.
